Fifth-grade science students from East Quogue Elementary school recently participated in a science field study as part of their comparative research of Long Island's North and South shores.

During the field study at Wildwood State Park, students learned about the formation of our island as a terminal moraine, made up of the debris that has accumulated as a result of an advancing glacier. Then, utilizing soil sifters, students examined the rocky makeup of the North Shore soil. Students also studied directionality incorporating a compass to identify their location on the island.

Concluding the study, the student scientists created and studied topographic maps.
