As part of a recent science unit, fifth-grade students at East Quogue Elementary School explored mixtures, compounds and different states of matter. As a culminating activity to the science unit identifying the differences between a solid, liquid and a gas, the students made their own rock candy by submerging a string into an oversaturated sugar solution and letting the candy crystals form.

In a separate activity, fifth-grade students learned about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as they studied some of his famous quotes and described their meanings using their own words.
