Each student wore a tie-dye shirt created in art classes to symbolize the many different colors that mean so much to rare diseases. In music class, they also learned a variation of the song “I’m Gonna Be” by the Proclaimers to show support. Additionally, there was a student-driven assembly to showcase their knowledge of rare diseases and the projects they had worked on all month. The students and staff also pledged to walk/move 500 miles within one week to align with the song. The highly motivated school community exceeded that goal and moved over 3,000 miles. The excitement generated with a competition to move was noticed in the hallways all week as teachers allowed students to gain miles as reward incentives to complete their daily work. After much deliberation, given the weather's uncertainty and lack of a precise weather forecast, we have decided to hold the vote as planned. I realize some of our residents may question this decision, and I would like to take this opportunity to share some insight. If we were to postpone the vote tomorrow, we run the risk of losing the potential construction start date of summer 2019. The importance of this has been discussed many times throughout the planning process. It would cost the district approximately $20,000 to ensure the summer construction period if the vote were not held tomorrow. This would be due to requesting the New York State Education Department to expedite the review process. Additionally, we would have to start our planning and legal process all over again. This includes all legal notification requirements, staffing requirements and Board of Elections notifications. The district would not be able to hold a rescheduled vote until much later in the school year. Furthermore, it is not legally permissible to reschedule a vote within the next couple of days or weeks. The East Quogue Board of Education will meet as scheduled tomorrow, March 21, at 7 p.m. The polls will be open on March 21 from 7 a.m. until 9 p.m., and voting will take place in the gymnasium. We thank you for your understanding and attention. Please do not hesitate to contact Mr. Long if you have any questions. Sincerely, Robert J. The focus of the three-day program included how the universe impacts physics on Earth. During the program’s first two days, students explored the different forms of energy necessary to make objects move. They built a roller coaster comprised of tubes, cups, tape and marbles. Before students began to assemble their roller coasters, they used YouTube for inspirational videos. Groups were given time to collaborate and develop a design that incorporated one hill and a loop to control the amount of energy the marble had. All students worked together generating ideas and offering strategies that ultimately led to the success of every roller coaster by safely transporting a marble into a cup. At the conclusion of the program, the young scientists explored the solar system and elements of astrophysics, the study of how planets and stars work. Students re-enacted the creation of moon craters by dropping various size objects to emulate meteors, and studied the impact by generating data composed of width and diameter. They further expanded their knowledge of astronomy by constructing a scale model of Saturn. Additionally, students learned of plans for the construction of the world’s largest telescope by a scientist in Chile that could help collect more information about the solar system. They studied CCD sensors, which are used in digital photography and telescopes, and learned how they convert information into images. Students teamed up to create a large image and act as “transmitters” only using nonverbal signals to their partner. The task was to color a 30-box grid to match the dot code given that corresponded to different colors. When completed, all grids were put together to create a message. https://eastquogue.k12.ny.us/News/Story.aspx?id=165981 Sun, 01 Oct 2017 04:00:00 GMT false165981 Back to School We are very excited for the opening of school tomorrow, Tuesday, September 5th. The faculty and staff are looking forward to an outstanding 2017-18 school year. Everyone is ready. Now we just need our students back. Students will begin entering the building at 8:50 a.m. Please expect some minor transportation delays in the opening days of school. Here we go EQ! https://eastquogue.k12.ny.us/News/Story.aspx?id=165982 Sun, 01 Oct 2017 04:00:00 GMT false165982 Crowe Science Field Excursion East Quogue Sixth Graders took their first Crowe Science Field Excursion on Friday. Guided by our partners from the Group For The East End, the students rotated through several learning stations. Our young scientists studied the physical properties of the Shinnecock Bay Estuary. They measured air temperature, cloud cover, wind direction and wind speed. Additionally the students observed the tide and soil. Further tasks included exploring the water quality of the bay and measuring salinity, turbidity and water temperature. The students learned about vegetation zones in the salt marsh ecosystem and studied the five kingdoms of living organisms. We would like to thank Mr. Parsons for working with us to catch specimens for our Living Bay Aquarium located in the East Quogue Elementary School. Thanks to our Sixth Grade Team for organizing this very unique learning experience. This program was made possible by the generosity of the Crowe Grant Fund. https://eastquogue.k12.ny.us/News/Story.aspx?id=165983 Sun, 01 Oct 2017 04:00:00 GMT false165983 Fun Outdoors https://eastquogue.k12.ny.us/News/Story.aspx?id=165989 Sat, 01 Oct 2016 09:00:00 GMT false165989 Reading and Writing https://eastquogue.k12.ny.us/News/Story.aspx?id=165990 Sat, 01 Oct 2016 08:00:00 GMT false165990 Education in Exercise https://eastquogue.k12.ny.us/News/Story.aspx?id=165991 Sat, 01 Oct 2016 07:00:00 GMT false165991 Outdoor Learning https://eastquogue.k12.ny.us/News/Story.aspx?id=165992 Sat, 01 Oct 2016 06:00:00 GMT false165992 Gardening https://eastquogue.k12.ny.us/News/Story.aspx?id=165993 Sat, 01 Oct 2016 05:00:00 GMT false165993
