November Happening in Fifth Grade

In ELA, fifth graders started a new unit focused on researching different ecosystems while using a variety of text and digital resources. They are also reading the novel “Hatchet” by Gary Paulsen. Students will be using their research and the connections they have made in “Hatchet” to create a research presentation on their ecosystems at the end of this unit. In social studies, the fifth grade is learning about the thirteen colonies and the American Revolution. They will be completing hands-on activities during this exciting unit. In math, students are diving into all things decimals. They are learning to add, subtract, multiply and divide decimals. Fifth graders also wrote thank you letters to local veterans and discussed what they are thankful for and have completed a variety of writing activities around these topics.

Field trips are an important component of a student’s education, and the fifth graders’ trip to Wildwood State Park proved to be educational and eventful.

The students visited stations provided by the park service, hiked the trails and learned about abiotic and biotic relationships. Within the stations, the students also learned about erosion and the water cycle.

They had a great time being together and enjoyed their lunch while overlooking the Long Island Sound.

October School Happenings in Fifth Grade

The fifth graders are off to a great start this year! They had a great time at the Fall Frenzy. Thanks to the PTA and special area teachers for organizing the event and providing our students with the opportunity to be active and creative.

In ELA, fifth graders are immersed in genre studies through our class core texts,“Amazing Aliens” and“My Teacher is an Alien.”  Students are using what they’ve read to even design their own aliens in writing. In science, students are learning about changes in matter, including the states of matter, physical and chemical changes and mixtures and solutions. Students created, observed, and experimented with Oobleck to experience the states of matter hands on. In math, students wrapped up learning about numerical expressions, the order of operations, and number properties. They are starting a chapter where they will use estimation, models and the standard algorithm to add or subtract numbers with decimals.
