February is filled with so many learning opportunities in first grade.The first graders started the month by making predictions whether the Groundhog would see it’s shadow. We eagerly awaited the answer.Guess what? Punxsutawney Phil predicted 6 more weeks of winter. Prior to celebrating President’s Day, the children are learning about the role of a President, the requirements to become President, and facts about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. The students are excited to celebrate Valentine’s Day on the same day as P.S. I Love You Day.We recognize how important kindness is all year long.The first graders recently published nonfiction books about a variety of animals. The students worked cooperatively in research groups and determined many attributes about different animals. We completed the unit with a writing celebration.The children are eager to learn about a variety of different school communities in our next reading and writing unit.In math, the children are becoming experts utilizing a hundred twenty chart.The children are counting on and counting back by ones and tens. Math is always fun at first! We are very excited to share optional Black History projects that we are researching from home at the end of the month. We can’t wait to tell you all about them.
